    Refinery Leadboard

    By Marked,

I really quickly whipped up a leaderboard for the Refinery. The leaderboard is naturally ordered by a member's level, which […]

    GDU Tech Stack

    By Marked,

Ok, this is definitely not the tech stack, which is straight forward in a site like this. But I thought […]

About to smash out the code for a “Recent Activity” list, similar to the old site. In a nutshell, it […]

    GDU4 Dev Screenie

    By Marked,

I've been out of the game so long, didn't even know Firefox Developer Edition existed

    MMO Project: Player authentication

    By Marked,

This project is going slow, and I'll most likely work on it when I'm bored or just wana jam by writing some code. Game dev is okay, but mixing it with web development makes it interesting  This evening I wrote the player authentication system and chose the front-end UI system it will use (for stuff like dialogues and styles out side of the game but on the page… y'know, beside the game in the browser).  For this system, it'll integrate perfectly into GDU. Some time ago I figured out how to really miss with the forums user system… which is the cornerstone of the GDU system, really. While I develop this, I have half a mind on making it available for people to use as a plugin. A very complex plugin that would need me to set up on another server/system. It may seem like integrating with GDU excludes any […]

    MMO Project: Local server setup

    By Marked,

Welcome to the first blog entry on the GDU MMO Project. With the release of RPG Maker MV, it is now possible to create MMO games playable in browser. Because MV games are essentially HTML5 applications.  I won't have much free time until about 3 weeks, but in the meantime I'm prepping to rip into development   Here is the basic project directory of an RPG Maker MV project, but there's something a little bit special about it. It's been set up on my local development server. Therefore I can run the development version of the game in my browser at something like gdu.dev/mmo/index.html. There's obviously no need to run the game as a windows application while developing the MMO because we'll need to immediately connecting to the local server.  In the image above there is a "system" directory: This contains a standalone PHP application that will handle all the server-side stuff. […]

Design tweaks I've been working on

    By Marked,

I've been a few design tweaks on the dev server, although haven't had time to release anything yet, so I thought I'd just post some screenies on the blog. They're obviously just tweaks to the original design with new fonts and borders around content and side modules. There's some game section tweaks too:

    BBCode Headings

    By Marked,

I have added new heading BBCodes to be used through the content sections (not really the forums).  The default IPB size bbcode is quite ugly… it merely increase the size of the body text. Headings are different: they are usually a different font, have a different line-height and other styles, and run in a hierarchy from 1 – 6. With these BBCodes you can use headings just like you would as if building a website, albeit through BBCode. Nonetheless, this will surely increase the presentation of your content, particularity in the games section.   Page title [pagetitle]Page title[/pagetitle]Heading 2[heading=2]Heading 2[/heading]Heading 3[heading=3]Heading 3[/heading]Heading 4[heading=4]Heading 4[/heading]Heading 5[heading=5]Heading 5[/heading] I note these is a pretty ugly issue with the pagetitle bbcode in the games section dashboard (brownie points if anyone knows why) which I will fix asap.  You would now notice if you started a new game that the hard-coded "Home" heading is now […]

    The First Blog

    By Marked,

Hi all, After several hours of coding yesterday, I have extended the Games section to include blogs. It was very challenging, and quite fun to code. I think it demonstrates the flexibility of the overall system and how extendable it is (not that you guys really understand, but I was able to make this really fast). I have added a new "blog" page in everyone's blog settings. For single-page games, you won't notice a thing. For the cooler people with pages enabled, the blog link will now be visible for everyone. Eg, Obviously this can be disabled (or renamed) in the ACP of your game page. Since the blogs are a link, single-page games will only have sidebar links. That's the only way for your visitors to get to your blogs (apart from links on the website, eg recent activity). You could always be cool and enable pages so you'll […]
I'm looking to add someone to the GDU staff team in relation to the games section. It would be a quasi-moderator position, but you won't really have moderation powers. I am the only person who has moderation powers in the Games Section  The main duties of the role would include: Featuring high quality games – including playing them Warning new listings that their content is insufficient for publishing Please let me know if anyone's interested
To coincide with the release of the new Games Section Blogs yesterday, I have updated and improved the BBCode editor throughout the Games Section and various content sections (Scripts and Tutorials). This is the new design Other features include:Click rather than hover to open dropdown menus (Size, Font + Smilies)The toolbar is now at the top, so you rely more on the scrolling of the textbook than increasing the size of itFixed emoticons  It is very important to have a robust BBCode editor throughout the content sections so authors are aware of what can be built with it. I will be adding more BBCode options in the future, and I also plan to create a quick reference system to display all the design BBCodes (there are actually a lot) so it is easier to create content. Let me guys know what you think in the comments, particularly on usability issues you guys have.

    Programming

It's a huge, elaborate, occasionally multi-lingual, block of RGSS that displays an almost schitzophrenic nature between refined and spaghetti code. It's taken me close to two years to properly understand the system and how I can dramatically revamp and change it, but, thanks.

    Special Thanks

I'm not sure whether Programmer or Special Thanks better suits. Thanks for several HUDs, and for making me stare at code I never understood for hours at end. Your teaching methods, while long and mentally excruciating, worked, surprisingly well. Thanks.
