• Hey, thank you! I'm working hard and trying to make incremental updates, I hope you enjoy the demo and would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

• Ryan isn't the only one looking for feedback – if you notice any unusual quirks, let us know, and if something isn't working as intended, I'll mediate and do my best to remedy it, unless it's something silly enough that Ryan can patch up.

We look forward to feedback – the more constructive it is, the better.

• Kickstarter is going AMAZING. Thank you to everyone who is supporting us and we look forward to hearing from you. Don't hesitate to email us.

• So I played the demo today after finding the Kickstarter last night, and I was really impressed. The voice acting was a nice touch, I loved the story ideas and concepts being used, and the combat system felt like a good mix of what I like in games similar to the early Final Fantasy games. I was even more pleasantly surprised to see the game work on my laptop, impressive since my computer sometimes has trouble with stuff as Youtube. So after that, I decided to pledge some money.

Another thing that I was surprised by was how little you were asking for in order to make a goal, $800 seems like nearly nothing when compared to the other games on the site being funded. $2 for a download of the game is a steal, and I have been encouraging my RPG-loving friends to at least check it out. I really love the pride and care that is clear from how they talk and how much they show. I really hope the goal is made, and then some. I'd love to see some stretch goals, if just to tempt people to put in more. While I understand that some of these pledges are limited, I think it might help if there were some unlimited rewards beyond the $2 and $5 ones, perhaps with the rewards adjusted to compensate.

All in all, I think that this is probably a good Kickstarter. The demo really helped with my concerns that I won't see this product finished (You never know with Kickstarter, as sad as that is). But I think this will be finished and come out really well. I'm a little concerned about getting people to know about this game, I think funding would be quickly met if more people knew. I only found the game by looking very hard in the Kickstarter game section, and that was purely by chance.

Good luck to the team getting this game done! I'm really curious about what the beta will be like, and what is meant by the game being changed by feedback. Or what the custom sprites mean. I'm very interested to find out!

Also… as a final thought, I'd love to see this game on the Wii U eshop, but I can imagine that would probably be a huge pain. Some console exposure would be great though, and I once again wish luck to the people making this game a reality.

• Oh, I forgot to mention about the demo, while I did enjoy it and was definitely impressed, if I had a single criticism, it would be the puzzle after combat testing, where you have to move the objects to get to the computer. While I figured it out after a few tries, I'm not sure if it is the best for the very beginning of the game. For the demo though, I can understand it.

• Tutis,

Thank you for your support! We are very excited and looking forward to finishing this game. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the demo, we are looking forward to moving into a beta testing environment as soon as possible — thank you for your advice, and throughout the beta we are hoping for people to add their suggestions on anything regarding what they would most like to see — we've had some really good feedback regarding the demo and I do listen to people's suggestions about what works the best.

The boulder puzzle outside the planetarium is sometimes frustrating to me as well. That's part of the reason I made the tutorial video for the prologue, and I'm sure it will undergo some changes before beta.

Custom sprites are going to entail costumes for Tibby as a thank-you to people who participated in Kickstarter. It's going to be purely cosmetic but some form of customization.

Porting to other platforms would be a dream come true, and could definitely be something to look forward to. We are interested in exploring those options and have had some conversations about how to make that possible.

Thank you for your comments and stay tuned for updates regarding beta testing!

Cheers,
Ryan

• Hey guys the game looks great! But I like to suggest you to use a message system script or something like that to fit the facesets in the text box OR provide full body/ half body drawings of characters so it looks more natural and professional 🙂 Good luck!

• Suggestion definitely noted, and sorry I haven't been on much. Since Bill C-51 was passed, I was reluctant to use my browser. There's been changes on who was in power, so now I can use my browser without feeling too threatened.

A custom script to handle the portraits a little differently shouldn't be too hard; a little super magic, change a couple of variables, and bam.
Now the problem is getting in touch with Ryan IRL again to code the change, since I've been outdated since holy-crud ago. xD

• Hey Josh — Have had the latest version transferred to my computer for about a week, and have just got around to checking items off of the website update list and Kickstarter list… slow and steady… I will send you a dropbox link at the end of today with the latest and greatest — thankfully we haven't had a single version without >=1 (even if almost unnoticable) game crashing bug yet.

• Alright, guys, a fast update; a HDD failure has shifted our priorities in an awkward direction. No progress lost in terms of development, but this does stifle the process mildly. I'll update things as soon as we have more info, and I apologize that Ryan himself isn't capable of updating you all, we're working as hard as we can to get back into the developing groove.

Also, allow me to express my gratitude to those of you that have been patient; I personally believe in the philosophy of "a rushed game is forever bad", and that's not the start I want.

• "A rushed game is forever bad" is very true, Josh and I have been talking about how we're going to tackle the next stage of development and I think that we're looking at bite sized chunks. It's going to be a lot of refinement and there are going to be features in the latter half that will require even more testing than before. As well as a few extra tricks & tweaks for the script. Thank goodness we're seeing some positive development now.

• Thanks to everyone for all the feedback and support! We love hearing from you and every bit of support is welcome and important to us. It's been a blessing hearing all of the positive remarks about this game, and I feel like it is paying off dividends for the development process. Cheers to everyone and I hope you decide to try it out if you haven't!

Machine Made: Rebirth (Let's call it 85%)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everyone,  Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! I hope everyone is enjoying your summer break — I know I am! I've been hard at work adding the finishing touches to this game, but there are a few things I wanted to mention before calling it 100% complete!  We need more people to review our game to provide a greater base for information and response from players — people need to know what to expect from reading reviews, and for each review that goes negative just because "I found a bug" or "It's been out for a while and still has problem X" it would be nice if someone added a positive review like "The bug I found was fixed" or "I became a tester and was able to contribute to improving the game" … sadly, people tend to write reviews from their immediate judgement instead of thinking […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (Testers)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everybody — Allsvin here,  We've had some excellent responses to our calls for beta testers, but we still need people to write reviews and help us finish it!  We've had record numbers of people picking up MM:R, which is pretty exciting, but I'd still like to know who is interested in it, and who wants to help to finish it!  Follow us here: https://www.facebook…ineMadeRebirth/ or send me an email at allsvin@gmail.com if you might be interested in testing! Or if you'd like to get a look at some of the data for our expanding playerbase!  Cheers, Allsvin
Hey everyone,  Machine Made: Rebirth's playerbase is growing, and we're getting a lot of great feedback from you guys!  A few awesome people from reddit have agreed to record gameplay for our game, I hope everyone will visit the videos and comment. There will be links to them here on the blog as well as on our steam page!  I'll post some more information about these within the next few days so stay tuned!  Cheers, Allsvin
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! I have a special announcement as thanks to the community and our players!  We've reached a record number of users and players! I'm extremely happy to say that numbers are quite a bit higher than I thought they'd be before 2.0.0. I'll keep you guys posted on updates, and hopefully we'll be able to fix the bugs, add the content and of course keep in touch with you amazing people! I'm still looking for reviewers, content creators and testers! If you are the type who can spot a great screenshot opportunity, or if you're interested in making music/trailers/etc. Email me at allsvin@gmail.com Cheers,Allsvin
Hey everyone,  On today's Machine Made: Rebirth blog, we will talk about some essential aspects of game design —  1. difficulty 2. variety 3. storytelling  These are present in most games that have RPG elements, and are especially important in true-to-form RPGs!  1. difficulty — some RPGs are notoriously hard, that doesn't mean yours has to be… unless we're trying to make the next Dark Souls, there may not be a good reason to underpower your characters, or include extreme situations where your player will feel in danger. In the event that your game works well with this theme — (ie. if its a game about a dangerous world, or a game about survival) you may wish to have a steep difficulty curve, but otherwise, you should ensure that even a new player will be able to pass most of the game's challenges.  2. variety — there's a great article […]
Hey everybody, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! I'm Allsvin, former progamer and creator of Machine Made: Rebirth!  Today, I'd like to talk to you about how to deal with some of the problems we face when creating games.  Some of you may be saying… it's just doing what you love — it's just creating something that you're passionate about and that you want to share with the world.  The truth is, very few projects are created without facing barriers of many different types.  In my journey of game creation, I'm sure I've seen just about all of the setbacks that would be possible to creating a game. I imagined finishing this game in a few months when I started it, but every step of the way opens doors to greater challenges, not the least of them being promoting and talking about the project.  What do you do […]

Hey everybody — I hope you're doing well!  We need another bug hunter to playtest MM:R!  I'd also like to apologize for those who weren't able to receive a key during our latest giveaway! Due to high traffic and demand for the keys, there were a lot of people who were left with dead links. We will try to find a better mechanism for hosting giveaways in the future!  I've never done a key giveaway like this before — its challenging to manage all the traffic that we get when linking a site like reddit to our blog!  In the future, we should be able to use the giveaway feature on indiedb OR use this site purely as a linking mechanism to the giveaway itself. If you wanted a key and you weren't able to get one due to high traffic, please email me at allsvin@gmail.com for a key!  Cheers, […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (Developer's Corner)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everyone,  Allsvin here, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, I hope everyone is enjoying the new year and has amassed at least a small fortune of awesome video games to play in the days ahead.  I haven't had a huge amount of time to work on my game project in the past few months, but have managed to keep adding in game content and fixing bugs where possible.  We're still ironing out bugs wherever they are found, and we have had some excellent responses from people playing, saying that they have enjoyed the plot and characters, and found it comparable to other rpgs made in flash or the rpgmaker series.  2.0.0 is going to be a huge benchmark of progress, and I'm going to continue with the 2.0.0 hype until it's released, since I think it will be a huge improvement for anyone who has played the […]

Hard At Work (Machine Made: Rebirth)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everybody,  i just wanted to mention that we're one version of Machine Made: Rebirth away from being finished, it will probably be a long process completing 2.0.0, but there's been some amazing response from people who have played, and I wanted to offer a special thanks to Saltome and Ardaceus for working through some touch-ups with me to this update.  The idea is that we'll be expanding content and addling in DLC and achievements over time, and we hope to get some feedback from the community for what that should be!  Hope to hear from you if you're interested in this project Cheers, Allsvin
Hey everybody, Here's a screenshot from some dabbling I was doing in Machine Made: Rebirth today, and I figured out that achievements are finally working!  Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, I hope you're doing well. I hope everybody is looking forward to Christmas and maybe has a movie or two in mind that they'd like to revisit this year, or something even more special planned for the holidays. I will probably be giving doing a key giveaway up until around Christmas, so if anybody would like to gift themselves, or a friend with a copy of Machine Made: Rebirth let me know! It's coming along quickly and is looking like it's actually going to be finished in relatively good time. Virtually all the features that we want are now in the game, the graphics are almost done, the music is done, the sounds are almost done and all we have to […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (Achievements)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everybody, we're trying to add achievements into machine made: rebirth, what do you think?  Any of you who've played — any good idea for an achievement to add in here? Anybody who hasn't played — do you like this idea?  Steam has a fairly straightforward way of adding achievements into published games, so far it looks like there is a lot of potential for adding achievements to our game!  If you're currently playing the Early Access version, you will have to restart to unlock any achievements.  Hope everybody finds this interesting, Cheers, Allsvin
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, I am Allsvin, lead developer of Machine Made: Rebirth, and today I'd like to share some thoughts on my game, the development process, sort of how things are going and what to expect towards getting it done and getting it available to as many people as possible!  To start off I have a question — does anyone know any game reviewers, youtubers or game testers who might be interested in playing machine made: rebirth?  Unfinished business — do you guys ever get that feeling where, you're at work for, or you start trying to tie up loose ends with a homework assignment for example… and the loose ends seem to just lead to more and more busy work? I hate that feeling, and how I deal with it is generally like this —  treat it like a test — put […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (Testing/Bug Reporting)

By Ryan Ferris,

I'll be needing people to look at this in a few weeks time for Early Access Release 2.0.0, which will hopefully feature all of the content that will be in the finished game !  Cheers, Allsvin
Hey everyone, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about some game development related experiences, dealing with my love of RPGs and my project Machine Made.  We're still in Early Access on Steam, and I've been trying to push an update for the next leg of the journey that should include hours more content and some upgraded writing and visuals.  We've had over 1000 people on Steam try our game from all over the world and I'm really excited to share with you guys the resolution of the story, I hope those of you who've been on the fence in one way or another will give us a try when we're done!  Chapter Three will involve running the party headquarters, going on quests to fulfill party members' wishes and ultimately confronting the Empress and the evil Machine God himself!  The next patch will include updated visuals, […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (Just Do It!)

Hello ladies and gentlemen, gamers and game developers of all ages,  Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog.. a place where I, your friendly neighborhood Allsvin talk about my thoughts regarding game development, RPGs and the awesomeness that comes with working on a fun and exciting project.  Today I'd like to talk a little bit about what happens when you get that … deep, unsettled feeling in your gut, that feeling that says "there is simply no way to handle this entire project — WHAT was I thinking?"  Lately, I have found that Machine Made is showing up in a lot of small communities around the web, and as exciting as that is, it comes with a little bit of a nerve wracking feeling — I don't know who is going to be commenting on our game, I don't know who is going to be playing it, I no […]

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey ladies and gentlemen — I'm swamped with trying to work on MM:R at the moment, but have been touched by a few of the great responses we've gotten since our release on Steam — here's a cool review that you might like to read. Expect within the next few days some sort of official development/personal entry from myself. Until then, happy reading!  http://www.madeforga…st-impressions/

Machine Made: Rebirth (Sequel and thoughts)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everyone, with my game getting closer and closer to being done, and I just can't wait to see it played seamlessly from start to finish, I have started having thoughts about what to do with the potential sequel, and have been wondering if anyone here would be interested in seeing a direct sequel or perhaps something quite a bit different.  In terms of a prequel, something in the same universe, or a direct sequel, does anyone have any really strong feelings or opinions about this?  Let me know, Cheers, Allsvin

Hello ladies and gentlefolk, gentlemen even! Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, a place where I, Allsvin, with whimsical fancy indulge you lovely people in my thoughts about game creation, about rpgs, and about sharing the love that we all grudgingly accept is possible to achieve in this lifetime.  So just what the hell have we been up to with Machine Made: Rebirth?  To put it simply, I want this game done. I want it so done, that people will not remember a time when it was not done.  To throw down onto a table a short laundry list of updates I'd mention sound balancing, hiring new artists to create visuals for us, promoting the game, testing the hell out of it, building the final levels, doing grammar checking on myself (which is endless and may never be correct) and the one that's just been killing me lately […]

Let's Play Machine Made: Rebirth (DEMO)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hello everyone,  welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where we talk about the development of my JRPG… I have an announcement! The auspicious and very awesome Toaofgames has agreed to let's play our in development game, and is offering his game commentary and time to do a let's play of Machine Made: Rebirth's demo, head on over to youtube and check out the fun right here:    And don't forget to check out the demo yourself, that now includes the completed prologue and chapter one! we'll be putting an extended demo and eventually the full version on steam soon… for now, I have a lot on my plate to get this thing finished!  Thanks for watching, Cheers, Allsvin
Hey lads and lasses,  Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I, Allsvin talk about my adventures in the world of JRPG development in the hopes of becoming a great game designer. Machine Made: Rebirth is looking good, I'm really pleased with the development that we've made over the last few weeks, it's not been easy but with a few pointers and a little touch-up work, we've been able to get them ready!  Chapter two and the rest of the storyline should fit seamlessly into place and we'll be adding them in sequentially as they're ready. I plan on posting short summaries of the story in each chapter as well as some screenshots, perhaps a walkthrough and of course you can find the download link on our main page!  Cheers, I hope you enjoy, Allsvin
Hey guys, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I, Allsvin talk about my jrpg project, muse on my thoughts about programming, and generally try to pander to you guys for as much attention and help as possible.  Lately, we've been looking hard at the general game mechanics for MM:R. trying to balance difficulty and add in an introduction for every game feature you will encounter — it can get a little overwhelming finding memoria, summons, puzzles and craftable equipment all at once, so we're spacing this out evenly and trying to create more of a flow and sensical progression to it all!  So far it feels amazing and I'm enjoying trimming content, focusing on the important stuff and watching people gain more and more enjoyment from testing!  Let me know if you'd like to be involved or if you're interested in our next stages for distributing the […]
Hey everybody, just whipped up a short video showcasing some of the work I've done with MM:R.    The ozzy song isn't our actual track for this portion of the game, was just listening to him while working away.  What do y'all think? Huge thanks for watching!  Cheers, Allsvin
Hey ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I, Allsvin, talk about the various antics and fun that I've been having working on my retro JRPG project, that is now past its release date by nearly a YEAR.  Let's quickly review a few of the troubles and tribulations that we've faced during our development, and talk about how amazing and cool and super-awesome-fantastical that this game has become as we've been developing, tweaking, getting feedback and generally just writing up a storm.  — We faced a complete loss of all of our data, resulting in a fine-toothed comb style search of the internet for a backup version, a quest in which we were successful, thanks to the saving grace provided by my dear friend and overall amazing guy, Troy!  — We faced nearly losing our minuscule financial backing during our small Kickstarter campaign, where […]

Machine Made: Rebirth (New Theatrical Trailer)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hello lovely ladies and gentlemen, Welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! Where I, your friend Allsvin talk about my JRPG project, that has been described as promising, nostalgic, challenging, and a host of other kind, complimentary adjectives! Today I'd love to share with you our new theatrical trailer hype! WATCH THE TRAILER Thank you all kindly for your time,Cheers,Allsvin
Hey guys, Allsvin lead developer of Machine Made: Rebirth here,  Just wanted to fill you guys in on what's been in my thoughts during the break and a few of the realizations I've made about my intentions with game development and the future of MM:R.  I spent a lot of time trying to track down old promotional forum posts and email contacts and realized that there are a huge amount of old, unused or outdated assets floating around on the internet, and a huge number of people have been looking at bugged or painfully outdated versions of the game.  Arcadeus, a great guy who has become my dear friend from this site who's working on the project Wonder's War (which you need to go have a look at if you haven't already, it's absolutely cool) went through the latest version with me and we now have a very stable release […]
Hey guys, it's Allsvin, welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog… and boy, do I have a lot of apologizing to do! Oh my goodness…  Our last patch was completely unplayable due to a starting location bug, and other people haven't been able to use the RTP from rmxp with our game, or haven't been able to patch up to the latest content using the Data folder… we've had a lot of failures in this area this week, but hopefully we'll be able to make some kind of patch that will allow for a simple install of the game and for it to be playable!  Well, wasn't that just terribly embarrassing? I would like to take some time out to personally apologize to people who have downloaded this game and been completely stumped at installation or by bugs and so on! It's only just now starting to be developed with […]
Hey guys, welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog…  here you'll find a small update which fixes the impossible puzzles and broken pathing in the game as well as a few small glitches.  http://www.indiedb.c…icenova-version  Enjoy! Happy gaming, Allsvin
Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about my upcoming video game release and the progress that we are Proteus Studios are making towards finishing our game!  Here's a link to a playable demo of our latest download and a fun summary of each character and the story!  http://forums.rpgmak…&comment=579540  I'm almost ready to make the second last quest in the game and feeling great, hope you guys have enjoyed and looking forward to promoting this game as much as possible before it gets completed!  Any advice about how to seek out people in real life to test and respond to your game?  A random thought I had, but I feel like it's something I'm going to have to look into to understand the game development process…  I hope everyone is enjoying this journey as much as I am, and I would like to […]

By Ryan Ferris,

Machine Made: Rebirth (A Proud Moment)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey guys and welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog…  Just a quick update for today, characters now have ultimate attacks that can be learned from super-rare tech scrolls. One for each party member. These attacks include custom sprite animations, voice overs, and a face graphic as well as the attack animation itself. I just thought it looked pretty impressive and I hope that everyone finds at least one of these to hear the cool in-battle voice overs.  Still progressing towards finishing this game, and looking forward to hearing from you all. Cheers, Allsvin

Machine Made New Version!

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey guys, it's not the full beta, but it's everything that I've implemented so far! I think it works!  Download it here: http://www.indiedb.c…h-demo-beta-101
Hey guys — welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about my RPG game, Machine Made: Rebirth, and let you guys know what's happening with the development and release process! We're finishing up our actual Beta! It's very exciting..  I have gotten a little addicted to Tera right now and have been grinding dungeons with my high-elf lancer for like 10 hours a day… I promise I won't disappear completely, but it's actually helping me to stay focused and I'm still brainstorming while walking around in Tera! I just thought everyone should know — for those of you who also check out my gaming and youtube channels, there will be some new streaming content for you to enjoy, and I'm still lurking here and on our other sites…  Sorry for the delays, Thank you and I love you all! Cheers, Ryan
Hey guys sorry for the INCREASED delay on our next patch… I've hit a point where I can almost finish the game in one fell swoop, or at least add all the content (without revisions and without necessarily implementation… a sort of awkward beast, but a game nonetheless)… I will continue to post updates about my progress, I'd also like to note we have some extra beta testers and advisors coming onto the team to help us wrap up the project… names will be announced after the release of the patch!  Thanks to everyone and cheers!
Hi everyone… I'm hoping that it's going to be a big weekend in the world of Machine Made: Rebirth…  Here are a list of things you can look forward to as soon as we release the next patch… including additional content and features, an enriched and lengthened storyline and balance updates.  Keep in mind that if you want early access or the ability to download before our bandwidth is taken up you should email me at allsvin@gmail.com and get your copy.  NEW FEATURES: — expanded quests on the world map — party changing system — get every party member including Karth — cool new crafting features — storyline almost finished  Tune in for the new download and some news by the end of this weekend! Thanks again everyone, Ryan
Hey guys and a big welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! I've been very busy with work and family things lately, so I haven't been able to push us closer to our epsilon-like state of finishing this project… it's still standing on my desktop like an obelisk of my desire for gaming excellence and the power and fun of game design. But when I do open it, I sometimes just add doodads to the map or double check things in the menus due to not having enough time to actually sink my teeth into a major move forward. Due to my time being slowly eaten up by other things, I've had feelings of anxiety about not having enough time to work on and promote Machine Made the way that I would like to and the way that I want to. How do I deal with these feelings I don't want […]
Hey guys and welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about my video game project as well as my love of classic rpgs, my inspirations, snippets from the web, from my project and elsewhere. We've had lots of people coming and checking us out and downloading the demo, so I'd like to thank everyone for trying it out! I hope you enjoyed and that you'll stay interested in me as I embark on the final stages of this journey! I never plan things well in advance, so it's starting to feel like I've exponentially increased the 100% that I originally intended to create into like… at least 200%. But hopefully I can still aim for 70% of that.  The sequel is going to be a spiritual successor with totally different characters. Just wondering of people's thoughts about that… I was considering having it be descendants of […]
Hey everyone, as you may have noticed I've been away for a while but I am definitely lurking in the background, reading your posts and responding to questions at the moment. I've taken a little break to get re-addicted to a few games that I love to play and sometimes record or stream, but I will be making time to finish the current Beta off as soon as I can. Development is going really well… I sort of went crazy with minigames and features and might have to prune back a few of them that have just become silly over time… anyways…  This post is intended for everyone who knows they want to be involved in the beta test but who is not already on our mailing list or waiting on the update for reviewing or beta testing purposes. Leave a comment if you might be interested! I will get […]
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about our lofty goals for game development excellence, as well as the fun and exciting things that we encounter along the way. Today I'd like to spend a little time noting that we're behind on updates particularly in the area of reformatting our indiedb page and also with regards to finishing the world map. These are features that we hope to implement in a visually pleasing and procedural way at the appropriate time.  Today I'd like to talk about something that all of us have a tendency to do sometimes, that can present a challenge to even very experienced programmers and writers alike. The unfortunate activity that we'd like to discuss is over-scripting. That is to say, adding unnecessary steps and unnecessary variables to play that do not provide any benefit with regards to the overall […]
Hello ladies and gentlemen — welcome back from our break, this is indeed the Machine Made: Rebirth blog where I talk about all things related to rpgs, steampunk goodness, game development and the fun and mischief that goes along with trying to make good art along the way! Today is a Friday and as such, we're going to be talking about what makes a good story-line, especially as regards rpg games, and what common threads we can expect to see that are going to be useful tools for finding a good resolution to your plot…  thread one — the heroes journey (what started everything in motion regarding the heroes' motivations…under what circumstances do they meet their friends and how does this change their goals?) thread two — the fate of the world (or the important aspect of the world that is altered during gameplay) …some questions here are — just […]

Machine Made: Rebirth Tues Jan. 26 (On hold)

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey guys welcome back to the blog, We're on hold! For now… Hopefully we'll be back next week! Thanks for the support, everyone, we look forward to hearing from you again soon. Cheers, Ryan
(Actually Monday's blog)  Hey everyone and welcome back to the Machine Made blog, where we talk about fun facts and debate the options regarding game development, rpgs and what we love the most. Today I'd just like to give a shout-out to everyone whose been helping to test the latest update… we're going to be doing some let's plays, some new video content for the page, some cool graphics and features for indiedb and as always, we'll be trying to establish a Q&A format and hear some of what people have to say about Machine Made. Look forward to that soon if you are following what we're doing here at Machine Made!  Cheers, Allsvin
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog! Today we'd like to share with you some super special news, we're going to be pimping out our page at indiedb and hopefully we're going be be gakking out another update before too long, like a regurgitated meal that I fondly remember, I'll be combing through the progress I've made over the next few days and hopefully coming up with something appetizing! How to make your own animation using sprites and show picture — use your photoshop tool or photoshop equivalent to grab various positions and graphics for the sprite you want to use, create a series of move picture commands and change the sprite at appropriate intervals — now you have your very own animation happening! Just how many sweet applications are there for this? Well… have a look at the title page for Machine Made: Rebirth, where […]
Hey guys and welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I misstate what day it is, and leave months out of the picture entirely. How embarrassing for me, I'm sure I will be scarred deeply. Did anyone actually notice that? Oh well, let's move on!  Today I'd like to talk about the significance of a tiny little feature that we've implemented here at Machine Made that I think is going to be a lot of fun and convenient for everyone. This is a little Common Event that can have as much depth as you need. The idea is to create a Quest Log that appears from a desired input — and will lay out significant plot points or objectives for the player, to prevent excessive backtracking and talking to NPCs.  Of course there will still be deeper dialogue options and rewards for those who do choose to talk […]
Hello everyone and welcome back to the Machine: Made Rebirth blog, today I'd like to talk to you just a little bit about linearity versus the sandbox and what are the implications of both? As a player who is accustomed to game environments where there is an immediate challenge present that has to be dealt with — as well as with ones that are moreso dependent on slow immersion and the idea that there is a great challenge ahead with a great result to be gained and it's going to be worth the wait but it is not going to happen for a while.  I think that both of these methods have to be included to successfully tell the story of an RPG game. I'm a big fan of the feeling that comes from just walking into an RPG world and seeing that it's fully populated with ideas and activities […]
Hey guys, super short blog today — I've been answering a lot of emails and have been busy, but wanted to mention we've looked into a few really good royalty free music sources and really cool independent musicians and we're making a few updates, additions and shuffling arounds of the soundtrack that I hope everyone will enjoy and appreciate, try it out in the next update and let me know what you think! Any suggestions or ideas about what people like in soundtracks in general?  Cheers, Allsvin
Hello ladies and gentlemen, fans and friends, members of the GDU community.  It is I, Allsvin aka Ryan Ferris, the lead developer of Machine Made: Rebirth and owner and operator of Proteus Studios. I would like to welcome you to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, if it's your first time visiting the blog, don't worry — you don't have to a game developer to have fun with this blog and this game… you should absolutely go download it. There is a link on our main page. If you don't have anything else going on, why not give it a try? Today is Wednesday, and that means that we're going to be talking about fun facts regarding items and skills, particularly a few things that you might be seeing in our latest update or that you might have heard about already.  I've talked about a cursed weapon, I have one that […]
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog. Today is a very special day because we were featured on the front page of a very prestigious, very awesome website called Indie Database. Find us on the front page!  Also, the new patch was released today! Er… last night-ish! Anyhow, I sure hope it works… everyone should be able to get it from our website or Google Drive if you want! Send me an email at allsvin@gmail.com and let me know what you think! Cheers,I hope you all enjoyed today's blog, we're really happy with how things are coming along.Hope to hear from all of you soon, and I hope you enjoy.Allsvin
Greetings fellow game developers and enthusiasts — you're reading the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where we talk about news in the world of game development with regards to finishing my game project, as well as tools tips tricks and fun facts about JRPGS and game theory in general! Except for today… because today is a Monday and I hate Mondays, it's a day where I just want to amuse myself and maybe make some sort of let's play video. So that's exactly what we're going to do… there are going to be a few gameplay oriented videos uploaded here over the course of the next few hours, so stay tuned for that, it's going to be the main focus of the day… as well as the upcoming update — there will be more news available about that on indiedb by the way if you're interested. <a href="http://www.indiedb.c…s/machine-made" title="View Machine Made: Rebirth on […]
Hey everyone and welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, a place where we talk about the development of my upcoming video game Machine: Made Rebirth, but also a place where we take a step back from the daily grind, and just try to enjoy ourselves as we talk about gaming, programming and other topics of interest! We've been working really hard on the presentation for this game — let me tell you, adding in a feature like sprinting or having to do a dash puzzle can confuse even the most well thought out of sprite movements, and animation and picture placement when you include things like transparent lights on a map also requires a certain amount of just… normal old reworking… so there has been simply a lot of that going on. So much so that our patch is going to be delayed! That's one piece of news for today. […]
Hey guys — ladies and gentlemen, gamers of all shapes sizes and colours, welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, a place where I show you some interesting things that have happened in the world of game development, hopefully things that are relevant to me and relevant to you. Today I would like to spend a little bit of time talking to you about scripting, but first I would like to talk a little bit about some things I've noticed… and some things that I'd like to accomplish here or present for you guys specifically regarding my progress towards releasing a finished game. We would like to at some time move towards getting a Steam Greenlight… we want the download, install and update process to be easier… we basically want to see ourselves make a deeper involvement in terms of content that's going to be available to the community… including news […]
Hello ladies gentlemen and robots — I know some of you are robots, don't be shy with me… welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I talk about what I love when it comes to the world of video games in general, specifically how to design games, how to master elements of story telling, and how to overall enjoy and promote the love of rpg game development that we all share and talk about. It's Friday today, and as such we're going to be zeroing in on story-lines, nothing so nit-picky as what type of character to write or exactly what sorts of responses to make in a tree of dialogue… but just the idea of… I am a player, and I want to experience that feeling that comes from finishing that first branch of quests in the first town in World of Warcraft, and walking out into […]
Hello ladies and gents,  Welcome one and all to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, a place where I point out my opinions about what it takes to be a good game designer. Today I would like to talk to you particularly about something that occurs within the writing aspect of game design, and to that effect is applicable to more than just video games but to any written media… and that is the ability to interest people in a character. A character is different from a person — people exist in the context of the world that they live in, characters are only subject to the extent of their virtue or heroic characteristics. A world that is foreign to the story that surrounds a heroic character will not be able to relate to what makes that character's traits good or bad anymore than you or I could be considered good […]
(No Updates Tomorrow, Patch Available For Weekend) Hey everyone and welcome back to my blog, where I talk about cool gaming stuff of all different kinds. Today, I'd like to take just a little bit of time to talk about some of the neater RPGesque skills and items that I have invented or stumbled across in my time at the computer. Here's a delightful add-on that came with our battle system that I really haven't spent enough time with — it's my favourite steal script because it allows for small chances of having various different items stolen! It's absolutely cool for the type of game that I'm making and I hope to have it expanded to include every single enemy in the game eventually! What do you guys think about names for the basic elemental spells? I've used firestorm, inferno, thunderclap, flood, typhoon, tremor and earthquake, and I'm fairly happy with those. I […]
Hey guys welcome back to the blog for Machine Made: Rebirth where I share my opinions about JRPGs and talk about my lofty goals in the game development world, with a different topic each day. Today's topic is just going to be sending a thanks to the community — thanks to Marked, our fans and our friends of all types and backgrounds, we're happy to be bringing things this far, the next patch is right around the corner… although today there wasn't any big news in the development side, and I've been way too busy with just life in general to make a proper blog post… other than that we hit 10 000 views of course! I'm hoping to have the next patch online or at least some new gameplay footage by the end of the week, so stay tuned for that as well — it's definitely a bit overdue! […]
Hello ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, wherein I talk about my quest to design a sweet JRPG, and the daily triumphs and challenges that I encounter in my attempts to be informative and entertaining. Today I'd like to start by just expressing that I personally hate Mondays and it's entirely possible that this post will go off topic multiple times, and that we may or may not cover any relevant information about the game that I am actually developing. I'd like to spend today mostly just talking about games that have inspired me, and a few fun ideas that I came up with, since it's a Monday… and Monday is the day where we celebrate play itself, and don't get anything done! Because I hate Mondays… too much to even invent a topic for them. How about those Player Touch events though, am I right? have […]
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog, where I discuss various daily interesting facts that I come across in my pursuit of programming and game development excellence, in a somewhat casual and fun way. Today's theme is going to be graphics and animation… this actually happens to be one of the areas of my game that I looked at very traditionally and that I really don't know a lot about. For example — here is one of the very first things that I did with the "Show Picture" command, and a few ways to really spice up what happens when we use the Show Picture command or something similar. Here's an example of making a simple animation for a face or for a full screen by changing the opacity of an image, or making multiple frames of the image itself.  There are even easier and funner uses for the […]
Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog where we discuss our experiences in the world of game design, particularly what we've enjoyed the most and what has given us some problems with regards to designing Machine Made: Rebirth. Today is a Saturday and I would love to show you just a few alterations to the script and construction itself of my game that we've been working on. What better way to start the weekend, when we have less of the clutter of everyday life to contend to, to really look at the meat and potatoes of this game. The idea for today's topic came to me last night when I was having a talk on social media with our lead programmer Josh — it went something like this. Josh and I were conversing about building three things for this game: 1. A script that would allow a character to […]
Hello everyone and welcome to the Machine Made: Rebirth blog —  — if you're unfamiliar with what we do here, we talk about what's going on with my video game project, we talk about who's delved the deepest into the testing environment, new people who have come aboard to help in one capacity or another, various cool other artists and projects that we have been inspired by and very importantly, who has discovered the bugs, the glitches and the errors and who has found out what they love about games generally speaking. Today, being a Friday, it will be the first of what I hope will be a continuous stream of daily updates to this blog and our other sites. I'm hoping that the format will allow for a different area of updates to be focused on each day, and what more interesting way to begin than with the story-line. The story-line […]

How good is Twitter for Machine Made: Rebirth?

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everyone Allsvin here… we've been made a featured game and had ourselves front paged for a day and shared on twitter… Big thanks to them for their support and I'd love to see all you Twitter folks share this tweet as much as possible — if I get 50 shares I'll make a Machine Made: Rebirth twitter account for everyone to get the latest news and talk about our game.  http://thecrowdfundi…/project/3D2E3X
Hey guys, we've just got our latest patch live and we're seeking new testers for this one! You can download it from the buttons above or right here http://www.indiedb.c…/mmrebirthdemo! Email me your thoughts at allsvin@gmail.com
DEVELOPER'S NOTE: "First and foremost — if you are reading this, thank you from the bottom of my heartfor taking an interest in this project. I truly hope you enjoy what I've made." — from the Machine Made: Rebirth FAQ Hey everyone — Allsvin here, owner and operator of Proteus Studios, Game Developer and leader of the team that's building Machine Made: Rebirth. What I'm interested in looking at today is why our release date has been held up… what our expectations were and what I can do now that we're looking at what it will take to finish this game. I'm going to talk a little about my game Machine: Made Rebirth as well as some of the challenges that I've faced from the project itself as well as from some of you guys during the testing and rebooting phase. We're going to have a quick review of what this project has looked […]

Machine Made: Rebirth — The World Map

By Ryan Ferris,

http://www.gdunlimit…dmap1-28221.png Hey everyone! Here's the latest and greatest news from Machine Made: Rebirth. Introducing the World Map — we're going to be using the World Map as a way to open up the environment and create a lot of overlapping story elements and freedom for the Player. Depending on who is in the party, any number of Story Scenes or Quests can be triggered when you enter an area on the World Map. These will create more immersion, familiarize us with gameplay and character elements and allow for a healthy amount of hours and content. There will be one of a kind monsters to fight on the world map, who will be extremely challenging and offer rare crafting ingredients and items. This will all be available in our latest update that should be rolling out within the next 2-3 weeks! If you haven't given it a try, please go and give it a […]

A Machine Made: Rebirth New Years

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey everyone, hope you're enjoying all the wonderful afterthoughts of your holidays and are ready to get all the latest about indie games and development! The "serious update" we mentioned has been released to testers and fans alike, and unfortunately it's a little riddled with bugs — however, it is still a huge expansion in terms of content, size, ambition, etc.  What this means is that we're getting close to the size of game that we'd like to create. And we still need your help — we need more experienced people to test, review and critique throughout the beta stage until we're able to actually distribute our game in its final form!  Hope to hear from you all before too long, Allsvin

Machine Made: Rebirth A Serious Update

By Ryan Ferris,

Hey Guys!  Machine Made: Rebirth is about to see the single biggest update since its creation… it's going to be a pretty comprehensive update involving every single aspect that you've seen in the early Alpha versions. Everything is cleaner, smoother, faster and funner. We've added a lot of depth, and are rapidly filling up our goal in terms of hours of playtime! We still need dedicated testers and reviewers to have a look at us, and we'd be very excited to share with you. Fans will already be familiar with my email address, and I'll look forward to hearing from you whether you've already talked to me about my project or not!  Thanks to the fans again so much, look out for this massive update to be rolling out within a week… Cheers, Ryan
Hey Everyone,  Allsvin from Machine Made: Rebirth here. This blog entry is all about testing and writing some feedback for our game! If you are interested in playing the latest Alpha release or if you are interested in writing up a short article about us, we'd be happy to hear from you! My email address is allsvin@gmail.com. This call applies from now until the end of Alpha testing, so don't hesitate to contact me and let me know of your expertise.  Thanks to all of our fans and supporters, Cheers, Ryan
Hi guys,  Basically I wanted to let you guys know that we're still looking for beta testers, thanks to everyone for the feedback and support while I was replacing my computer and getting my software reinstalled, I've had a lot of fun just brainstorming and being creative and feeling great and ready to finish this project up and hopefully move on to another!  Thanks to everyone who has supported us and given feedback, Ryan
Ladies and gentlemen,  I have spent a lot of time over the last several weeks answering emails from and on the phone with the three other entities related to our Kickstarter project — that would be: Kickstarter, a company called Stripe and my bank. The sad news is that it will take some time for the money to get to my bank, and the company that Kickstarter works with called Stripe is having trouble getting the information — like the account numbers and whatnot that they have to get to transfer the funds.  Anyway, what this means is that commissioned content including new music, graphics etc. will be delayed and all updates will be related to non-commissioned content. I still hope to get this resolved soon and show you guys that awesome new stuff!  Some other interesting news — Machine Made: Rebirth is now googleable, and I will be adding […]
Ladies and gentlemen, Alpha downloads have been distributed to testers and Kickstarter participants! We on the team are very happy about the current look and feel of Machine Made: Rebirth. After taking a look at the current version of the game, we're very satisfied with what we have to present and have had a lot of fun testing it ourselves. It took us an average of about seven hours to finish playing all the content start to finish that we have programmed so far as it is, which feels substantial as a landmark. The first person to defeat the last boss of the in-house Alpha Demo (Karth, General of Lilya's Military) was our very own Troy Wiedman, who finished his playthrough in a relatively quick five hours. Karth is a tough boss, even with the best possible skills & equipment, and so I decided to ask Troy about how he was able […]
Hey everyone: The Kickstarter process is now officially over. We have all been patting ourselves on the back and talking a little bit with the community. Let's have a look at some of the changes that have happened and what might happen as a result of some of the feedback from some of you guys. First of all — during Kickstarter, we ran out of bandwidth on our box.com account which supports our downloads for our demo as well as our Alpha testing patches. This has caused some people to be unable to download the demo — and we're going to be adding a second box.com account to mirror all downloads, which we're hoping will solve that problem for now. We're planning an update of the Game Trailer, and are looking for feedback from our supporters as well as people to review the game and test for bugs. Our latest stable release of the […]
Ladies and gentlemen,  We've managed to get more than 100% funding for our kickstarter project, and have even more interestingly come into contact with a few new contributors for content who are going to be cross-promoted here, on our other sites and on our Kickstarter Page.  If you're a donator, then expect to receive an email from Kickstarter confirming your donation, and instructions about how to get your copy of the Open Alpha, your key for the Beta (If Applicable), and your download license for the retail release!  Cheers, Ryan
Hey ladies and gentlemen,  Kickstarter has been a lot of fun, we're almost at our target and we've had a lot of positive responses from everyone… I'm happy to say that after Kickstarter, we could be looking at a slightly different project altogether. We have nearly reached our target for funding, so anyone who is interested in donating and hasn't done so, feel free to have a look at us here: https://www.kickstar…e-made-rebirth.  After Kickstarter, I'll be posting links of potential digital artists or composers who've shown an interest in working with us… some for free, other under commission. I'll be working mostly on content for the next few weeks so, updates will be slow from now until the end of Kickstarter, but we're always happy to hear from you!  Cheers and thanks again, Ryan

Hey guys,  It's a lovely rainy day here in Ontario, Canada. I wanted to take an opportunity to answer some frequently asked questions and fill you guys in on the contents of the upcoming newsletter and what is going on with the team. We're testing the latest alpha — this will be the final opportunity for alpha testing before we start adding in beta features and the first open beta test could come as late as September. We've had our team hard at work producing this content and I hope you will all enjoy the new graphics and music as well as the updates to the interface, gameplay etc.  We've been asked about rewards for Kickstarter — the opportunity to have an item, skill, enemy named after yourself is already available, and some other features which will include a direct relationship between content and your donation will also be available. […]
Hey guys!  Open Alpha has been released to the testing team and so far it's running smoothly and we couldn't be happier with the massive boost of content that we've had from everyone on the development team, even the newcomers have been hard at work to provide great images, music and a play experience for all to enjoy. I'm floored at how fast this project is coming together and cannot express my happiness at how things have grown from the foundation that I started with this project.  We're planning a Kickstarter development newsletter that will include concept art, new music as well as our goals for the next month of development, as Kickstarter is almost a guaranteed success… it's a dream come true and we're looking forward to sharing the story with you all — if you haven't checked out our Kickstarter yet, visit us at https://www.kickstar…e-made-rebirth!  There will be […]

Voice Talent

By Ryan Ferris,

Yesterday we had the pleasure of sitting down with some professional voice actors to add some very special sound clips to Machine Made! The results are fantastic, and everyone can look forward to hearing a preview in the upcoming extended Demo! As well, I would like to note that kickstarter will be underway shortly, and will be linked in the main page shortly thereafter.  Thanks and regards, Ryan

A little bit about tech scrolls and recipes.

By Ryan Ferris,

Tech scrolls are texts that are hidden throughout the Machine Made universe. Simply reading one of these scrolls can grant the user new abilities that they may have otherwise never learned!  Tech scrolls along with custom crafted equipment and stats-boosting consumable items will allow for character customization, enabling you to augment and specialize each of the playable characters in Machine Made to your own preferences.  Recipes are instructional texts that are required for high-level crafting and can be used to improve items that you already have, adding magical effects, bonus stats or changing the item class altogether.

First public release

By Ryan Ferris,

It's finally here! Machine Made is ready for the public eye and I couldn't be more excited. I hope that you all enjoy watching the development of this steampunk fantasy rpg!

Writer Reviews Machine Made: Rebirth

By Ryan Ferris,

Who hasn’t felt that desire to be somehow unique? Different from everyone else around you? It’s a feeling I genuinely believe every one of us feels at one point in life. So, why not experience it on a new world, as a memoryless, eye-patched angel? From the get-go, this game pulls you in. You wake up to be told there were complications during the surgery… you’ve lost the use of one eye… but then you want to know “what surgery?” You’re told you’ll have a chance to “start over” now, but you don’t know yet what you’re “starting over” from. Even on your way to train, so you can survive when you leave the ship, you bump into more mysteries, like the girl who greets you like you know each other, before suddenly deciding she won’t speak to you. So, you get to enjoy navigating a cool environment, with fantastic, […]
Hey guys,  We're having a fantastic kickstarter so far… Machine Made couldn't be happier with the results, and we're looking forward to getting this game into as many hands as possible before commercial release. We appreciate all the coverage and support that we've received and personally I'm fully intending this to be a true-to-form indie project, modestly funded and highly available to the public.  For that reason, keep in mind that I'm very easy to reach and as the Lead Developer I'm happy to devote any time I can to answering emails, troubleshooting, explaining our mission and keeping the ball rolling towards the intent of playability and accessible price point. So far, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and it has been a pleasure to interact with the audience in a close knit and personable fashion. Extra incentives for kickstarter are on the way, so don't hesitate to pass the […]

Machine Made: Rebirth TBS Minigame

By Ryan Ferris,

Started looking at this today, it's a challenge but it's fun as well. I have most of the triggers I need, just need to copy them a bunch of times for each character!    Cheers, Ryan

Troy: Origin of Machine Made

By Ryan Ferris,

Origin of Machine Made   I met Ryan several years ago. While visiting and playing Mario Kart 64 we started talking about gaming. I talked about my love of fighting games, and rpgs, and that was when Ryan told me about the project he was working on. I got to play the original version and I found it fascinating. Playing something made by someone you know instead of a company that you follow was a really cool experience.   Afterward Ryan and I had lost touch for a while, but I kept the game hoping one day I would get to play one of the newer patches. I had randomly conversed with Ryan and he had told me progress was being made but at the time he had all the testers he needed. I still kept my copy. Then last year out we reconnected on Facebook, and Ryan told me […]

Machine Made: Rebirth — Duel Minigame

By Ryan Ferris,

Machine Made: Rebirth includes a lot of compelling features, another one I'd like to share with you guys today is the implementation of duels!  Some battles in Machine Made: Rebirth will occur in the standard turn-based RPG style, other large-scale conflicts will appear more like a turn-based strategy (think Final Fantasy Tactics), and some conflicts will be won in 1 on 1 combative duels.  Cheers, Ryan
We've had some conversations about this project, and we have a strong impression that there could be a sequel or two in the making after the first "Machine Made" game. As the lead developer, I think the potential is there and I would love to see it happen. The first game will be called "Rebirth" — which is essentially the thematic center of this game. What this means narrative-wise is that "Rebirth" will have a stronger focus on the two main characters and their story, their romantic interest and their respective journey, whereas the treatment of other characters will be sub-plots or narrative material to be explored in the sequels. Don't worry — each character still has a backstory to explore and unfold, and will most likely feature as a main character in part II or part III!

New Look Coming Soon

By Ryan Ferris,

Machine Made is proud to welcome graphic designer Dan Hotchkiss to the project, and looks forward to presenting a new look and feel to our page this weekend!
