Hogwarts

  • About the game
    Create a character and guide them through their life at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – recieve your letter, buy your equipment and head off to school.
    Ideally will eventually include all seven years (and maybe beyond), with subject choices, exams, relationships and various events. Currently focusing on completing the first year, and will then see if such expansion is feasible.
    Draws inspiration from the original SIMs game and Harvest Moon Back to Nature for features and gameplay.

    Uh…Long time no see?

    Time somewhat ran away on me, and I realised this week that somehow I haven't updated Hogwarts since October, and haven't really done much work on the game in that time. This is therefore a small update, mostly featuring some new items & icons and a preliminary edited tileset for Diagon Alley.  I'm planning to make a more concentrated plan over the next week to break the ideas I have for this game down into smaller, self-contained tasks, which will hopefully help me get back to working on this more regularly!  (Updated file in dropbox = HogwartsSIM_090516)

    Features added Outside area (courtyard) Greenhouse access Basic gardening (in greenhouse) Pumpkin harvest side quest Now that I think I've got the basic timetable etc. in place, I've started on putting into place side quests/"stories" to add some variety (and chances to gain items, e.g. potions ingredients) – this is parts one and two of the gardening side quest. I'll probably try to polish the gardening system in future updates, but for the time being I'm planning to work on sprites and maps  (Updated file in dropbox = HogwartsSIM_251015)

    Features added Improved common room door choice system Extended item categories Overhaul of potions system Still very busy with offline commitments, but managed to work on the potions system a fair bit – hence the title; recipes are dependent upon possesion of the correct book, brewing on a) having the ingredients & b) potions level/ability. I've also made some tweaks to other features, particularly item categories (using Bob423's item menu script) and the common room door system (ForeverZer0's message choice window script, also key to the potions update), as well as doing a few bits and pieces of sprite/icon work that for the most part – if at all – won't yet be visible in the game.

    Feature added Birthday Very busy at the moment so haven't been able to add a huge amount – also trying to figure out how to implement some bigger features in the (hopefully) near future. Added in a birthdate function, and as I add NPCs and a friend system (eventually) will expand it.

    Features added Basic item categories Improved some shops It's been a busy few months, and haven't had much time to work on RPG stuff. Mostly, I've managed to fix a few minor bugs and started implementing an item category script. I may not have much time in the next few months, but will be trying to do bits and pieces when I can.

    19/01/2015 – Update

    Features added Grades Non-uniform outfit Study option Apologies for the lack of update since November; I was rather busy with non-RPG stuff.This time around have finally given your character the ability to wear clothes other than their uniform at weekends and in the holidays (though as yet, you get no control over this outfit or when it is worn), inserted a grade system (recieve your grades each term, improve them by doing homework, going to lessons and studying) as well as adding a "study" option in the library. In addition I've fixed a few bugs that I've come across – notably an error in the lunch/dinner system, a major problem with the timing of actions and one involved in the "Frog Choir" option.     24/11/2014 – Update

    Features added Pale/mid/dark parent skin tones (no choice) Updated introduction Shopping trip to Diagon Alley Home parent routine Contrary to my statement in the last update, I haven't worked at all on the clubs & skills aspect of the game! Instead have been tweaking the introduction to include things like a trip to Diagon Alley and the train journey – though both will need considerable updates and polishing, I think they're complete enough to be included. Please let me know if you find any bugs, though! At the moment, most things you buy will have no apparent function, but I intend to eventually include an actual check on whether you've bought things/issues at school if you don't have equipment.     24/10/2014 – Update

    Features added Pale/mid/dark skin tone options (m) Quidditch matches on Saturday – hopefully fixed! Frog choir (Monday evenings) A smaller update this time, having finally managed to get game character hub back up and running (not entirely sure how – suspect the latest update didn't sit well with my computer) and therefore able to finish off my character sprites for the male skin tone choice. The bug with the Quidditch matches on Saturdays should now be fixed, so please let me know if it isn't!I've also updated the screenshots in the gallery to be with the new sprites rather than the old ones. Will probably work on more clubs and skills, as mentioned in the last update. Though I may try to add something in for Halloween, depending on time over the next few days!

Still not 100% happy with the female character sprite, but for now it'll do while I work on a similar male version. Once that's done, I'll see how I feel about adding another layer of complexity to the character creation. Suspect that the next step after character creation will be to add in more clubs (which I have planned) and hopefully start including "skills", e.g. "creativity" "logic" etc., which you can improve by performing certain actions and which feed back into your abilities in something like potions.     11/09/14 – Update

    Features added Cat/Owl/Toad selection Basic interaction with cat or toad Random "letters from home" event Gobstones club (weekend) Potions club (weekend) Chess club (weekend) After a month off due to other commitments, was able to get back to using RPG maker in early/mid August. This update should have been up last week, but delayed due to problems getting the file onto dropbox, now thankfully overcome!  All of the new features will be further updated in the future (and once the owlery is built, interaction with the owl will be added too), even if only at the level of new icons or sprites. Finding it a little difficult to decide which features to focus on implementing as priorities – I had actually made a more complete (though still far from actually complete) version of the game a few months ago, but realised a lot of the basic functions were getting very convoluted, and […]

    [*] Quidditch match non-functional  Was alerted of this and tried it out myself – thought it was working, but realised I'd only tested it with a time-jump event, so hadn't realised that my setting for "date" was a day out of sync…oops! In progress of fixing and testing, so will hopefully be functional in the next update!
