How to combat fake money?

Recommended Posts

This topic came up today and i figured its something good to talk about. How would you combat fake money but keeping the person anonymous at the same time like it is now?

Heres my long idea that might just work.

One way to combat this that no one would like but would be really effective. Each bill has a serial number, and you also add a hidden bar code that only certain scanners can pick up. Every store is linked up to a central government system that keeps track where the bills are in the stores and if they are currently in the store or out of the store. So when you give money to the clerk they scan it into the system and scan any money out. If that bill is already scanned in or out when they scan it there will be a red flag. If the bill isn't in the system at all then that means someone tried to fake a serial number and bar code, then a red flag will show(not an actual red flag but a warning for those who don't know what i mean lol). You also use the current system on the flagged money to see if its the fake one or real one. If the bill is already in the system and the bill you just scanned in put up a red flag you will know what store has the fake bill since the system tracks what store it was checked into last. so if your bill isn't the fake one you contact the other store and let them know they have a fake bill.

Sure this system wont work for face to face transactions but its a way better system than what we currently have and in the future it will nearly rid all fake bills.

This will also be good to combat crime. If a person steals money from a store without scanning each bill out and tries to spend it at another store or store it in the bank the bill will still be shown in the store it was taken from. So the bad guy will get caught if he tries to spend it in any way.

If lets say power goes out there could be a battery powered scanner that uses satellite internet to transfer the data.

Counterfeit prevention is a hard topic, and every country in the world has to deal with it. Your idea seems good but it only takes one person outside the treasury department to say about the hidden bar code and then it'll explode like wild fire. On top of that the scanners for money couldn't possibly be government regulated simply because of bureaucracy and governments never being able to handle anything on their own. So the bar code thing would be leaked right away and then it only takes a smart counterfeiter some time to figure it out.

Canada had a huge issue with it. Back in the 90s we had a new 'Canadian Goose' series of money printed aimed at reducing counterfeiters, with 2 years the RCMP broke a 100 million dollar counterfeiting ring of the new bills. sine then our money was the most counterfeited in the world (even places like Uganda and Mexico had less counterfeits lol) til we bought the Auzzie's plastic bills.

The issue becomes a bit easier when dealing with electronic transactions, security measures are more easy to build allowing for many levels of protection, but even that's not perfect.
