Time to bring back story driven gaming?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys while i won't say gaming has given up on story driven gaming i will say more people are voting with their wallet saying that gaming as a whole is stuck in a rut i mean if you look at game sales the games that sold well were mostly the same things that we have become comfortable with however i believe that the work you guys put into these projects and the indy resurgence could all be signs that we all need something new im not talking about mechanics but gameplay because games make us feel good why though it is because gaming fulfills 3 needs

1 a need for competency

2 need of relatedness with other gamers

3 a need for autonomy and right now very few games do this it is why so many people watch lets plays of their favorite games also why i believe that a new wave of rpg games with multiplayer elements are needed like take watchdogs for instance the game was simple but it had the mentality that if you didn't search around you might miss some side mission or alien isolation the atmosphere is what makes the game and how do you get it not with bloated budgets or giant resources but to

1 relate to your players with a well written story

2 give the player the control they want this does not mean that all games need to be open world rather make the world inviting setting a pace that has players searching out the story can be done with side quests/ missions or by collectibles or even just making the story's path the most inviting

3 competency now i know that today most games have autosave and a easy mode with harder difficulty settings that do not always seem to be that difficult it is important to remember just because a game is hard does not mean its not fun so feel free to make your players mad most will accept your challenge and find new and interesting ways of defeating your bosses and solving your puzzles

now im rambling hope this was helpful to someone feel free to give your feedback

Let's Plays, game guides, and many review sites ruined story driven gamin. We know everything in advance as its thrown in front of our faces. Then of course there are lazy developers who don't focus on writing a decent story, they only care about pushing the next game for profits.

well wile ill admit some games do this not all do if you are truly setting up a sequel with an established story then thats ok however in todays market content in bulk is the mentality most people have while most should look at the merit of having a shorter story to allow for more interesting game experience also the profits are what allow them to make interesting games while its art art does not feed you look at most famous artists they all became big when they died because content was scarcer but in the digital world most people whith the skills to code or manage the production of a game need the funds to guarantee content being released so yea sometimes they have to give in due to budget limitations deadlines or  corporate demands so its not being lazy just coping with the environment

I agree. It's bad. I read a review on Dragon Age: Inquisition and had a feature that doesn't come until much later in the game (and obviously was supposed to be a surprise) ruined for me. Evidently I am a fan of said game and have watched trailers, since Youtube is designed to show related videos, I have now had these talentless Let's Play hacks ruin the game for me by inserting spoilers in the video titles.

Now while I don't outright disagree with you, I do think your focus is on the symptoms and not the problem themselves.

I COULD write an 100 page essay on what I think the problems of the industry of today; trends, shortened development cycles, unnecessary multiplayer, micro transactions, DRM pushing, on disc DLC, "HD" Remasters, etc. Name your pick. I don't think there is a lack of story driven game play, I think there is a lack of GOOD story driven game play.

Just remember, we have to start voting with our wallet. If a game is good, buy it, if you support DLC, then buy the DLC.

Find review sites you trust and read their recommendations, get a Gamefly account, it's only $15 a month and pays for itself if you don't buy 3 full priced crappy games; conversely it can help you find great games to support that didn't have Destiny or Watchdog level advertising. If a game company keeps releasing the same shitty game every year, stop buying it unless it actually ends up being a awesome entry. This is the only way that we can get Square Enix to understand that we HATE FINAL FANTASY XIII STOP MAKING MORE OF THEM WE WANT BETTER WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU ARGGHHGHGHHGHGHDGHSGHSDGLSGDGJL

And finally, I'm not a big fan of the Indie scene myself but on Steam but there are some fun and amazing games out there, made by people who don't have shareholders that dictate their vision and passions. Fresh blood that isn't afraid to push gaming in a different direction, I definitely recommend checking out that scene more if you haven't already, but again, do your research and see if these people are worth investing YOUR hard earned money into.

Thanks for your imput i agree with most of what you said exept for those who cant afford the new consoles or games lets plays are their main source of gaming information and wile some are good others are not also whill ffxiii was bad lightning returns brought in some interesting mechanics while recycling ffx-2's idea on the sphere grid but also gave you the feeling of turnbased battle in a faster pace but ill agree making you pay for content that should have already been in the game is not what we want i think we all remember spending hours on hidden minigames and blitzball how i wish they would bring it back i tell you what it was worth ea making a whole game out of it with unique teams however the way things are i hope they never do or it would be just a cash grab but you are right the only way to get the games we want made is to vote with our wallet and there are a few community's out there doing that like angry joe army and there are many topics in other forums

but i digress thanks for taking the time to help with the topic
